In June 2022, LC Packaging UK became a Textile Recycling Association member, which represents UK collectors, sorters, processors, and exporters of used clothing and textiles. Tom Loveridge, Account Manager for textiles based in Grantham, said, “The objectives of the TRA align with our own goals, which include the promotion of textile recycling of second-hand clothing and shoes. The textile industry brings many economic, social, and environmental benefits.” He continued, “With the increase in movement within the textile industry, both in the UK and abroad, it is becoming increasingly important to emphasise the positive effects of textile recycling.”
The TRA is also affiliated with the Bureau of International Recycling (‘BIR’). BIR supports the interests of the recycling industry on an international scale as clothing is no longer merely a practical necessity; it has become an expression of one’s identity, and textile products have reached unprecedented levels of variety and abundance. Apparel alone generates over $1.3 trillion in market value each year, and that number is growing.
The Pulse of the Fashion Industry report highlights that Global Fashion Agenda, Boston Consulting Group, and Sustainable Apparel Coalition have projected that global apparel consumption will rise by 63% by 2030 to 102 million tonnes. So, we would always recommend recycling your textiles to prevent them ending up in landfills.
Through our membership in the Textile Recycling Association, Tom anticipates bringing innovation in packaging for the safe storage and transport of recycled materials, ensuring they arrive at their destinations without wastage. As we progress, he will provide updates.
